ALL TO PLAY FOR AS R&G ROOKIES’ TROPHY REACHES FINAL ROUND!
With just one round remaining of the 2016 MCE British Superbike Championship, it is all still to play for in the R&G Rookies’ Trophy as following Assen, current leader Dan Jones battles to stay ahead of Ducati Cup rider Tom Rawsthorne and BSB star Glenn Irwin. Assen also saw James Whitham name Tarran Mackenzie the R&G Rookie of the Meeting, his third nomination of the season.
The now annual trip to Assen once again proved a dramatic affair as riders from every class looked to end their season on a high. With the Superstock riders not attending, it was left to the British Superbike, Supersport, Motostar and Ducati Cup riders to battle it out on track. A win and a second from series leader Dan Jones saw him retain his position at the top of the R&G Rookies’ Trophy standings, but with Tom Rawsthorne and Glenn Irwin achieving top rookie status in both of their races, Jones’ lead is now down to just eight points ahead of Brands Hatch.
Alongside the main Rookies’ Trophy, each weekend Eurosport commentator James Whitham chooses one rider to be his Rookie of the Meeting. For Assen, the award went to British Supersport Championship leader Tarran Mackenzie, who battled his way through the pack from 17th on the grid in the opening race to finish fifth, before securing a podium finish and extending his series lead in the second outing. This was the young star’s third nomination of the season.
The R&G Rookies’ Trophy is open to those riders competing in their first full season in their respective class, with the overall winner at the end of the season receiving £500 cash and £1,000 worth of R&G product support for the 2017 season. Points are awarded based on the rider’s performance compared to their fellow rookies in the class, irrespective of the overall finishing position.
R&G UK Sales Manager Alan Garrett added “With just one round remaining, it really is still all to play for in the 2016 R&G Rookies’ Trophy. It has been an incredible season which has seen rookie riders shine across every class and that has been reflected in the number of different leaders we’ve had in the Trophy. Brands Hatch will be a fantastic event and whoever emerges as victor will be a worthy winner!”
